Mutual Red
2013 / HD Video Projection / 3.45 min
Mutual Red shows close-ups of two people whose heads are mirrored, situated on top of each other. The image remains abstract, while we perceive the weight and pressure exercised on one another. It is only after the camera moves over the first face that it becomes clear that we are experiencing a head-on-head balancing act. Through mutual sacrifice, the two characters are realising their performance within the limits of physical possibility. Filming in close-up, the camera remains focused only on their faces throughout the duration of the video. This proximity makes their experience almost physical for the viewer. Mutual Red pushes the human body to the borders of the impossible. The tense images evoke an uncomfortable feeling that subconsciously links us to the conditions of our bare existence.
