Portrayal of a Crisis
2019 / c-prints / div. dimensions
This photographic project revolves around horizons of crisis, unfolding in relation to places and their historical or religious significance. The situations depicted draw attention to human coexistence with forms of power, while charting an evolving timespan, in which charged elements from the past find actuality in contemporary life. Through the tension created, the compositions aim to portray a state of permanent crisis. A contemporary military presence is depicted in front of ancient guards standing on historical Roman walls. A dog appears to be protecting photographs holding human memories. Scaffolding erected on a church altar portrays a place of spiritual accumulation and salvation as being in a state of restoration. In the final photo, a collapsed human figure appears as if it has emerged from Renaissance mural paintings of a bygone era.
